Today, November 2022, was unexpected day for both me and my new dog. I have been searching to adopt a dog for over a year now. I spent most my time on various rescue dog centres but dogs that are friendly and good around kids and these dogs were snatched up fast.
It’s taken me a year and half making the decision that felt very painful, to buy a dog. At first I looked for puppies, the cute little ones and soon realised that with four kids, one only 16months old I wasn’t being realistic.
Before my realisation I contacted various puppy sellers, I couldn’t believe the price and others well cheap but not microchip, vaccination, they were sent puppies in my view too early 3 weeks old, puppies should leave the mum at least 8weeks old. That was a big worry, everytime I would ask a seller to send copy of the vaccination card and microchip so I could go and purchase the dog, some would go quiet while others would say things like you wouldn’t get this dog breed this cheaper anywhere else.
Without a picture of documentation that they said they would show me once I went to they property. I felt uneasy so I stood my ground and rejected doing business with them. Someone recently told me that when purchasing a dog, you have to go about it as if you were purchasing a car.
If you contact a car dealer for brand new car, what discounts would you ask for? And what questions would you ask for, when it’s about a second car?
Dogs are not cars, but the principle is the same, decide on budget and stick to that budget no matter what. My budget was very low (£200) so find small dog, that was good with kids and other dogs wasn’t going to be easy. But one week of searching http://freeads.co.uk for dogs to buy. I ended up, getting the hange of searching and what to look for, what questions to ask. One big problem, my dog wasn’t trained, he was isolated from birth and we have had loads problems.
So when I saw my dog on website http://freeads.co.uk something happen, I felt excited but I was told someone else was going for him that in the morning.
Update 3 months on:
Questions I should have ashed? Is the dog neutered? Big mistake, my dog isn’t up neutered and I look after dogs so it’s been a really challenge.
Is your dog good with children under 2 years old? My new dog bite my son, father, my 19months old, my 11year old son and a male friend.
Without proper history and the fact that this poor incident dog wasn’t trained when he was a puppy isn’t his fault but selling on dog knowing that can harm others specially children is very cruel. The fact that I have to pick up the pieces isn’t fair.
When I collect the dog, there was an urgency to the whole transaction, the family were moving apparently country the next day. Looking at the dog, he was matted, smelled weird and he came to greet me and I thought he I leave him. They will leave in this house alone, if they are really moving country and the dog might die. So I decided to continue with transaction.
It’s been an expensive start of our journey and the endless sleepless night hearing my dog bark, bark and act aggressive towards people and other dogs.
Running a business that look after other people’s dogs, I’m losing income every day as I haven’t been able to get clients that my dog is comfortable with.
They cost of neutered omg 😱 is super expensive. There are some organisations that might help with cost neutering like the RSPCA who gave me voucher towards the cost treatment, I was so grateful. This is only for people on low income. Do your research.
But I have been consistent and my dog Bruno, is started to greet people with barking or being aggressive.
He is also slowly greeting other dogs and he started asking them to play with him, I’m so pleased. Even there I’m not let him off the lead, yet but we are both enjoying each other’s company now.
I would say don’t buy a dog, but go the rescue centre as they train the dogs. The only reason I didn’t was because the rescue centre to allow you to adopt a dog if you have children under 5 years old.
